NOT IMPORTANT CRITERIA
- Captain’s don’t need to be the smartest/most experienced person on the field
IMPORTANT CRITERIA
- Expected to be present for most/all games of the league despite playing status
- Knows basic information about the sport
- Knows basic information about the league and BU community (Recommended playing in two bloomington leagues before captaining)
- Positive, uplifting person
- Seek out new players on the team to keep encouraging them and keep them positive
- Able to point out other players on the team to help in providing higher level information
ONE TIME LEAGUES DUTIES
- Hand out merchandise (jerseys, discs, etc.), if necessary
- Set up shade tent and table(s) underneath shade tent, when necessary
- Team name chosen and submitted to board members
- Jersey designs created and submitted to board members, when necessary
- Receive good survey results from team at the end of the league
- Winter league waivers signed by team and returned to board members
BEFORE GAME STARTS
- Send out weekly e-mail that is fun, inspiring and informative (I see the first two a lot but sometimes hear/see captains lacking on providing information)
- Retrieve cones from board members and set up fields
- Retrieve scoreboards from board members and take to field
- Retrieve water/Gatorade tubs from board members and set up where needed
- Remove soccer goals from playing fields when playing at Karst
DURING GAME
- Work with opposing captains to figure out the format for the game. For Example: What is the male/female ratio going to be for the game? What are going to be the start/ending times of the first and second half? Are time outs allowed?
- Remain positive and focus on providing uplifting comments to all players
- Keep spirit up on sidelines and make sure everybody is having fun and getting playing time
AFTER GAME
- Record score and text to board members
- Gather cones and return to board members
- Retrieve scoreboard and return to board members
- Return water/Gatorade tubs to board members
CRITERIA FOR COMPENSATION
- How the board thinks you did as a captain
- How your team thinks you did as a captain (through surveys)
- Merchandise being received. For instance, each person who doesn’t get their jersey it’s an automatic $12 the captain won’t be getting back, for each person who doesn’t get their disc it’s an automatic $10 the captain won’t be getting back. 3 cases in one league, immediate removal from captain (possibly league) and never allowed to captain again. I would urge captains to print out a sheet for the team and force signatures as proof that discs/jerseys were handed out and the board can even provide these forms if necessary.
